Palombara Sabina - Hill-top castles such as this are the kind of thing one runs into when you get off the beaten path and simply drive around the country side and "explore". The circular tower of this one is from the 9th century and is built on some ancient Roman ruins, as you can see by the marble pieces leaning up against the wall in the third photo. Like all such places, the old medieval town is tucked up against it and spills over the cliff down the hillside. To put things in perspective the cypress trees, center top of photo 2, are about 50 feet tall.

The open courtyard off the side of the castle was full of children playing ball.
"Who goes and gets the ball when it goes over the side?" I asked them.
"Aww, we're careful. It only happened once. Hit every roof on the way down. We didn't even bother go looking for it."
With such an incredible place to play, and given the distance down, can't say I blame them.
