The Perugia Assisi March is actually helping Eni get away with murder. Eni, the largest oil company in Libya and Italian, has just renegotiated its oil contracts with "Libya." Before, the profits flowed to the Libyan nationalized oil company and back out to the people--giving Libyans the highest living standard in Africa. Now, Eni wants the war stopped because it got what it wants! Now, Libya's oil is being given away to Italian oil oligarchy elites. Is the Peace Movement going to help?

On May 31. 2011, Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini opened Italy’s consulate in the Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi on Tuesday and pledged financial support for the rebels who are seeking to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi and laid the groundwork for Eni's new contracts.

On September 12, 2011, Eni Energy Company CEO Paolo Scaroni went to Tripoli with a delegation to meet with top level officials of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) and the Libyan National Oil Company and signed new contracts.

The new contracts take Libyan oil profits from Libya to Italy, decimate the previously strong environmental protections, and were signed for a song. Yes, Italy funds a new "government" in Italy with very little popular support. Italian newspapers go along with it. And when Eni has their contract, the Italian government "wants peace."

These are public documents, people. Let's not help Eni get away with murder in Libya. Italy can't steal Libya's oil. Imperialism and regime change for profit are evil!

I remember walking the 18 miles from Perugia to Assisi in 1985! I am curious to know how many people participated back then compared to the huge numbers now. The Peace March should definitely be a story worth reading/hearing in the international news media!

"Pace e bene a tutti!", the Franciscan blessing, has been said for eight centuries by the followers of Francis; peace and good will to all! Young Francis Bernadoni fought in a war between Assisi and Perugia, was captured and imprisoned, and decided war was not the way to solve the problems of mankind. Just the thought of visits to Assisi fill me with a sense of peace. A peace march in Assisi! How appropriate.

Rosemary, I remember that day. It was very moving to see all the people of all ages walking up to Assisi with banners and signs. If only everyone felt the same way...What a beautiful world this would be.

One of the many things I enjoyed about this day was seeing that almost every Comune or Citta participated and flew their banner proudly. I can't imagine a city or town in America taking such a brave stand as an official act of government. Bravo Italia!
