calimero1 CalimeroExhaustive research has uncovered the Dolomite’s (Eastern alps) response to the Piemontese (Western) Alps fil da fer, featured a few weeks ago.

It is called the Calimero, which is the name of a well loved Italian cartoon character, a plucky little black feathered duckling, with his yellow beak and half the white shell he popped out of still on his head like a hat.

calimero2 CalimeroWidely available at most mountain huts and chalets in the area, the Calimero tastes like a cross between English custard and tiramisú.

It is made with Vov, which is an Italian type of eggnog, heated up with the coffee machine’s steamer, and gets an espresso and whipped cream layered on top. Let’s go over this carefully. Ingredients: Egg, honey, vanilla, brandy, coffee, whipped cream. Obviously a miracle drink…it includes all food groups.

The view isn’t too shabby either.

  1. Death by cholesterol!

  2. A work of art! It sounds incredible! Beautiful photograph of the Dolomites dusted with snow – they look like a dessert too!

  3. Every once in a while…don’t worry about your usual health concerns and just enjoy. No wonder many Americans are so over wrought and can’t enjoy life!

  4. Just breathtaking!!!!!!! I could go for that dessert right now. I canot tell you how relaxing I felt just looking at the pictures you have sent.
Thank you so much!! Keep the pictures and articles coming.

    Ciao,

  5. What Americans don’t realize is that the average Italian eats very sparse meals during the week, the foods being very simply cooked. Dishes such as lasagna, ravioli, etc. are HOLIDAY foods, not weekly; everyday meals can start off with a simple soup with a little pastina, a salad of maybe just lettuce and tomatoes and a dribble of olive oil, vegetables, a quickly cooked small portion of meat or fish, a cup’s worth of pasta (or less) plus some wine and a slice or two of bread. This is why the average Italian doesn’t have the weight problems Americans do and why Italians can enjoy a calimero once in a while an not “pay” for it.

  6. Hey, why is this website “bashing” the Americans? Their eating habits & way to enjoy life has nothing to do with the Dolomites. As an Italian/American I took this as an insult. Stay “on point” !!

  7. Did I cause this? I hope not, I was just joking and playing with the British dessert called Death by chocolate…

  8. Dear Rita;
I really don’t think there’s any American bashing (‘<_')???… It's just that everyone here is on a fad diet and wondering how the French, Italians and Asians–who are food-centered–stay slimmer than us. I do see where you're coming from Rita, there is an awful lot of negative conclusions about Americans which I disagree with, BUT, I was bringing up the innocent topic of why Italians can enjoy a calimero without the pounds coming on…
What is interesting–and the question has never been resolved–is how do many Sicilian women stay thin when seemingly on a daily bases they enjoy those massive delicious, sweet pastries with their morning coffee? Some things can never be explained.
Stef, it's because of the famous dessert "Death by Chocolate" that I've enjoyed more than several times that I'm by choice off chocolate for a while, it's soooo delicious that it's quite impossible to have "ONLY" one or two or three slices. Pax.

  9. As an American, I have heard the statement “Death by Chocolate” so many times. I do not consider that statement American bashing at all, as Rita suggested. Let’s all relax and enjoy the beautiful pictures that are sent to us. Life is just to short to complain about a silly statement, which did not mean any harm to Americans.
As far as putting on weight, it does come from the genes you are born with.Let us all try to remember that!!!!!
    Ciao,
    Claudia
