As the troops there were Special Alpine troops. If you are ever in Rome and want to see what they looked like go to the Borghese parco and see a statue of one of them. Great part of history. He was born and raised in Verona not to far from this location. He was caught in 2 avalanches some where in this location, barely survived the last one. I visited there with my Mom in 2008, staying in Bulla/Pufels above Ortisei (Uhrerhof Deur). An interesting historical fiction book to read is "Soldier of the Great War" which mostly takes place in the Dolomites. Very interesting note and such a beautiful part of the world.
